Honest John Morrill, a versatile sort who could play every position except pitcher, was signed to a five-year contract with Boston in 1876. A gifted defensive player, he led National League third basemen in fielding in 1879 and was the best percentage fielder among first baseman in 1883 and 1887.
He was named captain of the Boston team in 1879 and took over as player-manager in 1882. During the 1883 season he led the club during a second-half surge that included 33 wins in 44 games, clinching his only pennant. Morrill batted .319 that year—a career best.
